kernel of slightly curved dust tail 7 deg in PA 290, fading to PA 260. In 46 cm L
f/4.5 x230 the inner coma and wide fan shaped jet towards S keeps showing a
fascinating stable pattern of bright and dark arcs (four of each at this session)
curving around the yellow pseudonucleus. The jet structure produces an offset bright
thin string of dust extending tailward. Reference stars Alpha Cyg and Alpha Lyr.

Comments: Dust tail 5 deg in PA 310. In 44 cm L x100, this was the most complex comet
I had seen in almost 20 years! Two bright, yellow arcs and a third fainter one
(the "hoods") with intervening darker areas were clearly seen S of pseudonucleus.
They looked like waves emanating from a slit. The nucleus' dark shadow was evident
and stretched WNW, N of the bright, central dust tail. The beginning of the tail
made a bend near the nucleus before straighting out. The ion tail had a rugged
outline, especially on the N border. Nucleus had a magnitude of +0.5 to the naked
eye. Altitude 22 deg. Visible all night long. Site: Virsbo, Sweden.

Comments: Dust tail 7 deg in PA 310-270. In 44 cm L x100, three hoods appeared as 180-130
deg arcs S of pseudonucleus and a fourth one was faint and only 45 deg wide. The first
180 deg wide hood was in contact with the nucleus and it was probably feeding new material.
The complex was yellow but the N part, where the ion tail emerged, had a green tint.
The broad dust tail curved towards W while the ion tail shot up to Epsilon Cep. To the
naked eye, the central spine in the dust tail appeared as a thin line coming from the
nucleus. Hale-Bopp rivaled Hyakutake at its brightest. Magnitude corrected for extinction.
Altitude 27 deg. Site: Virsbo, Sweden.

Comments: Dust tail 10 deg in PA 308-250. In 20 cm T x135, four hoods were seen where
the first one was in contact with the ca 5" wide pseudonucleus and evidently spewed new
material. The ion tail seemed to extend past the Milky Way but it was only an extension
of the Milky Way in Cepheus. The end of the curved dust tail was 6.5 deg wide.
Hale-Bopp surpasses now Hyakutake in brightness and is reminiscent of the painting of
Comet Donati in 1858 (see cover of Sky & Telescope Feb-81). Altitude 26 deg. Very
transparent weather. ZLM=+7.2. I consistently glimpsed M81 in UMa naked eye. I could
manually follow Hale-Bopp with the telescope as long as 6 minutes past local sunrise.
